I love pasta and for years I’ve been a fan of  a certain popular brand.  When I received samples of ShopRite’s new Imported Organic Specialty Pasta, I contemplated all the weeknight dinner possibilities.  For this recipe I decided to keep it simple and use two ShopRite Imported products (San Marzano Tomatoes and Imported Organic Specialty Pasta) to create a simple meal that doesn’t require any culinary expertise.  The quality is impressive enough for food enthusiasts, but the recipe is familiar enough to please children.

This recipe relies on a simple technique of creating a homemade marinara sauce.  Many food bloggers swear by this method.  If you can open a can, slice an onion and boil water, you can do this!

When you have quality ingredients, you know you’re going to have a great meal.  ShopRite Imported Organic Specialty Pasta has an ideal texture: it’s hearty and retains an al dente texture, even after being sauced or reheated.  I don’t like mushy pasta and I assure you that this pasta retains its integrity.  The ShopRite Imported San Marzano Tomatoes are packaged with whole basil leaves, which sets these tomatoes apart from others.  They are smooth and slightly sweet without having any of the acidity and bitterness that I find in other canned tomatoes.  Keep the pasta and tomatoes in your pantry to get a fresh taste of summertime throughout the year.

Pasta with Simple San Marzano Tomato Sauce
Sauce adapted from Marcela Hazan’s Essentials of Italian Cooking

1 can (28 ounces) ShopRite Imported San Marzano Tomatoes
5 Tablespoons butter
1 medium onion, peeled and halved
1 pound ShopRite Imported Pasta (choose your favorite variety), cooked according to package directions
salt and pepper, to taste
fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Combine tomatoes, butter, and onion in a medium saucepan.  Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a simmer.  Cook for 30-45 minutes, stirring and crushing the tomatoes occasionally.  Once sauce is cooked, remove onion and keep sauce warm until pasta is ready.

Cook pasta according to package directions.

Serve sauce on pasta.  Top with fresh basil, if desired.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: As a POTLUCKTM blogger, I received the ShopRite Imported Organic Specialty Pasta from ShopRite for free.
