Eating Organic with ShopRite

Posted by , July 1st, 2013

My husband and I try to incorporate as much organic food into our diets as we can. While it unfortunately isn’t in our budget to eat that way 100% of the time, I do my best to stick to organic versions of the “dirty dozen” – produce with the highest pesticide residue – and I always buy organic meat so I don’t need to worry about growth hormones or antibiotics.

Before ShopRite came to town, I had to split my weekly shopping between two stores: one “regular” grocery store for everyday staples and a second “specialty” store for meat.   Now that we have a ShopRite, I’m so happy that I can get all of my shopping done in one place! Even better, I can do it without breaking the bank.

In the produce section, organics are easy to find – they’re all in a huge, brightly labelled display smack in the middle of the refrigerator case. You can’t miss them. (There’s also plenty of organic produce scattered throughout the department. Look for the signs, or look for sticker that start with a “9”, which indicates that the item is organic.)

For pantry items like canned tomatoes and beans, Aisle 1 is the place to be. Again, it’s clearly labeled with the blue “Live Right” logo.

Organic meat is a little trickier to find. In fact, it was several months before I even realized ShopRite carried organic meat! In my local store, it’s in a section by itself, all the way on the end right before the freezer cases start. They selection varies quite a bit from day to day, but I can almost always find exactly what I’m looking for. I can also always find a deal – check out those prices! $1.99 for organic chicken legs? $4.99 for ground beef? I’m not even joking, they had Clayton’s organic flank steaks on sale for $3.49 a pound a few weeks ago. I literally did a double-take because it seemed too good to be true! You better believe I stocked up on those… my freezer is filled to the brim!

So, how will I be using all that organic flank steak? Here are a few of my tried-and-true favorites:

The above is written based on my experience at my local ShopRite; yours might be laid out differently. If you can’t find something, ask an employee – they’re always super friendly and will point you in the right direction.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: As a POTLUCK blogger, I received the Clayton’s Organic Beef from ShopRite for free.
